At Home Parents
Most kids grow up with one or both parents who work in offices, where they have to travel to arrive on time to their jobs. However, for over five years both of my parents have been working at home, for Marketicity. I do not find it annoying, in fact, I am grateful for it, and even more so when I could not drive myself to places I needed or to attend an after school event.
Every once in a while, they do leave the house. More often than not it is my dad, going to a meeting. He has been across the country working with clients, but is not gone longer than five days at a time. There are few downsides to my parents owning a small business and working from home, and that is one of them.
Another small drawback of my parents working from within the house, is that when I have friends over, sometimes we have to be quiet. We are not that loud to begin with, but it does become bothersome to have the subtitles on the TV for a long amount of time. If there are people over, we usually choose to stay downstairs, where my dad’s office is located, so he simply shuts his door to minimize noise. If he is on a phone call, we stay upstairs, but keep the volume low because my mom’s office is nearby.
The company has had some interns, and I have been able to meet some pretty interesting people, mainly from surrounding towns. My parents work with others, so it is not just them tackling all of the work. The people they work with are nice and outgoing, and they do not just have business relationships but they are friends as well, and it is always fun to work with friends.
Even I get to help out sometimes, like this blog post. I provide assistance with anything from setting up products for meetings and the occasional photoshoot to editing blog posts to helping to set up for fairs.
I know it is not usual to have both parents working from home while owning a small business, but I enjoy it. They are both home more often than not and I get to see them everyday, even if they do travel every once in a while.
